
Tooling is where hardware projects get emotionally expensive. A mold might run tens of thousands of dollars. It also outlives any single production run — and whoever controls the tool controls your options.
Too many buyers discover ownership only when they want to change suppliers, pause a line, or move production closer to market.
The rule we use
Whoever pays for the tooling owns it.
If you pay for the mold, it is yours. We run it in production while we work together. If the project ends, you can move it — ownership is not a bargaining chip.
If we co-invest or lend tooling for a specific program, that should be explicit in writing before payment, not implied in a footer.
What to clarify in writing

You do not need a lawyer for the first conversation — you need a clear sentence in the quote that matches how you think you are paying.
How this connects to design fees
We quote design work at cost and credit it fully toward the production order. Tooling is separate: it is capital tied to your product geometry, not hourly engineering.
That separation is deliberate. Design belongs to you once paid. Tooling belongs to whoever funded the cavity. Production is where we earn margin — so we are not incentivized to trap you in either design or tooling.
Red flags to walk away from
- "The mold stays with us as security" with no written exit path
- Ownership that magically reverts to the factory after you paid
- Refusal to name where the tool is stored or who maintains it
- Quotes that bundle tooling into an opaque "project fee" with no line item
Before you sign
Ask for three things on paper: tooling price, ownership statement, and transfer conditions. If the answer is vague, treat that as data about how the relationship will go when something goes wrong — because something always eventually does.
